Settled in 1683 and incorporated in 1788, Yorktown was named in commemoration of America's decisive Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown, Virginia.  Yorktown is 40 square miles and is made up of five business hamlets of Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, Jefferson Valley, Crompond, and Yorktown Heights.
The Town of Yorktown is a beautiful community in Northern Westchester County, New York, 35 miles from New York City, with forty square miles of rolling hills, farmland, residential areas and light industry.
Yorktown includes extensive recreational facilities with over 1400 acres of town and state parks. On a clear day, the Town owned 125-acre park at Turkey Mountain provides some of the most picturesque views including the New York City skyline from the summit!  Browse the Parks and Recreation
Department page for a listing of all Town Park facilities. In addition, five miles of the 22-mile North County Trailway bike and pedestrian path provides a scenic ride or walk through the town. One of Westchester County's largest nature preserves is located in southern Yorktown at Teatown Lake Reservation.  Two 18-hole public golf courses are located at the Sanctuary Golf Course and at the County owned Mohansic Golf Course.
Four highly rated school districts serve the town. The Yorktown Community & Cultural Center is home to many activities including the 600-seat Yorktown Stage theatre, a gymnasium, a satellite of the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester known as the Yorktown Teen Center, The Yorktown Senior Nutrition Center, and The Yorktown Museum. The John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak is one of the Town's special treasures.
Yorktown's major commuting artery is the Taconic Parkway which runs north-south through the Town.   US Route 6 is the Town's northern east-west road, Routes 202/35 runs east-west through central Yorktown and Route 129 runs along the northern edge of the Croton Reservoir. Yorktown features several historic neighborhoods and five business centers; Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, Jefferson Valley, Crompond, and Yorktown Heights.  Visit the New Yorktown Chamber of Commerce website to learn more about the businesses in Yorktown.
